How to change your school location
Follow these steps to update your driver training school location.
1. Make sure the new location meets legal requirements
Before choosing a new location, make sure that the new location:
- Meets the zoning requirements outlined in RCW 46.82.360(6)
- Is not within 1000 feet of a Licensing Service Office, per RCW 46.82.360(1)
2. Update your address and gather documentation
Before you can change the location of your driving school, you must update the address on all of the following:
- Your Department of Revenue business license
- The lease for school premises
- The insurance for school premises (must include the street address for the school)
- The insurance for your instruction vehicle(s)
- All vehicle registrations (learn how to update the address on a business vehicle)
You must upload proof that you've changed your address in all the places listed above.
If your school administers driver's license exams
If the school is a testing location you will need to provide us with:
- An updated Driver Training Schools Examinations Site Information form
- New drive routes
3. Update your school location
You’ll need a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account to update your school location.
Log into SecureAccess Washington (SAW)
Don't have a SAW account? Learn how to create a SAW account.
After you log into SAW
Select the “Update Physical Address” Account Maintenance Request (AMR). You will need to upload your lease and Certificates of Insurance during that process.
If your school administers driver's license exams
If the school is a testing location you will need to submit an “Update Contract” AMR. This is where you will upload your Driver Training Schools Examinations Site Information form and information about new drive routes.
4. Allow processing time
An auditor will contact you to schedule an inspection of your school and vehicles.
5. Post your license
Post your license at your place of business before you start instructing students.
Log into SAW to print your license. You may also request DOL to print and mail you your license (a $5 fee per copy will apply).
